Prednisolone is a synthetic corticosteroid used to treat a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It mimics the action of cortisol, a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands, and helps to suppress inflammation and immune system activity.
Mechanism of Action:
Prednisolone works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, altering gene expression, and suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines. This results in reduced swelling, redness, pain, and allergic reactions.
Common Uses:
Asthma and allergies (severe flare-ups)
Rheumatoid arthritis
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Inflammatory bowel diseases (like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
Skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis)
Autoimmune conditions
Organ transplant rejection prevention
Adrenal insufficiency (as hormone replacement)
Dosage:
Prednisolone is available in tablet forms such as 1 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 25 mg. The dosage depends on the severity of the condition. Short-term high doses may be used for acute flare-ups, while chronic conditions may require low, maintenance dosing. Tapering the dose is essential to avoid adrenal suppression.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
Increased appetite and weight gain
Insomnia
Mood swings
Fluid retention
High blood sugar and blood pressure
Long-term use may lead to:
Osteoporosis
Muscle weakness
Cataracts
Increased infection risk
Adrenal gland suppression
Cautions:
Prednisolone should be used cautiously in people with diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, or infections. It should not be stopped suddenly after long-term use.
Storage:
Store at room temperature (below 25C), away from light and moisture.
Note: Prednisolone should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Misuse or abrupt discontinuation can lead to serious health risks.
